Are there local business tax receipts required in Hillsborough County?

Yes. If you operate a business in Hillsborough County, you are required to obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt. This used to be called an occupational license, and some people still refer to it that way. The name changed but the requirement didn’t. You need one before you start conducting business, not after.

The Hillsborough County Tax Collector’s office handles these. You apply through their office, and the cost varies depending on your business type and category. Most small businesses pay somewhere between $20 and $200 annually, though certain classifications can be higher. It is not a significant expense, but failing to get one can result in penalties and complications down the road.

Renewal happens every year with a deadline of September 30. The county sends renewal notices, but it is your responsibility to renew on time whether you receive a notice or not. Late renewals come with a penalty that increases the longer you wait. Operating without a valid receipt means you are technically out of compliance with county ordinance.

Here is where it gets slightly more involved. If your business is located in an unincorporated area of Hillsborough County, like Riverview or parts of the South Shore, you only need the county receipt. But if your business operates within an incorporated city like Tampa, Plant City, or Temple Terrace, you may need a separate city-level business tax receipt in addition to the county one. Tampa has its own application and fee schedule. So depending on your location, you could be dealing with two receipts instead of one.

This is separate from your Florida state business registration, your sales tax certificate, and any professional licenses your trade or industry might require. The local business tax receipt does not replace any of those. It is one layer of compliance that applies specifically at the county and city level.

When you are going through business formation, it is easy to overlook the local business tax receipt because so much attention goes to federal EIN registration, state filings, and entity setup. But it is one of the first things the county expects you to have in place, and some landlords and licensing bodies will ask to see it before they work with you.
